2 - Chassis
The Bebop chassis is based on the Traxxas Stampede XL-5 - a very sturdy, entry-level R/C truck. We took a cue from Jean-Louis Naudin's DIY Drones Blog, which uses a similar model: the Traxxas Monster Jam Grinder. Both trucks have a comfortable ride height and beefy suspension. Since our local hobby shop had the Stampede in stock, this one became our truck of choice.
There are three important interfaces to the chassis:
1 - Battery Connector
2 - Steering Servo Connector
3 - Electronic Speed Control (ESC) Connector
The battery connector remains unmodified for this project. Only the steering servo and ESC connectors were adjusted. We exposed them by opening the receiver box using size 2 and 2.5 mm hex keys. Then we removed the receiver box entirely with a size 2 mm hex key. The steering servo and ESC wires are long enough so that they can be routed to the electronics housing.
